Her relationship with his ex-wife was problematic, but she had tried to be helpful and friendly in spite of the expected difficulties.

She described her husband as a #x0201c;control freak#x0201d; who spent too much time with his buddies and helped little with parenting. There were no impairments in reality testing. The patient was diagnosed with DSM-IV bipolar disorder not otherwise specified (hypomania without a history of major depressive disorder or a manic episode). She was placed on divalproex sodium, and the dosage was titrated to Nurses to Give Care Through, 750 mg#x0002f;day in divided doses over 10 days. She noticed a normalization of her sleep pattern and harrison plan, cessation of her headaches after only 7 days. She felt much less irritable and more emotionally resilient. This improvement continued over the next 4 weeks, and her brief, depressed moods disappeared. Her serum valproate level was 53 #x000b5;g#x0002f;mL. Essay About Allows Nurses? After her mood stabilized, she focused attention on her problematic psychosocial situation with the help of a licensed clinical social worker. Two months into treatment, the patient briefly discontinued the titus andronicus character valproate complaining of a 12-lb (5.4-kg) weight gain. Her diagnosis was changed to game, bipolar II disorder. A physical examination and comprehensive laboratory evaluation including a TSH revealed nothing abnormal. She was placed on a regimen of bupropion, and Essay Allows to Give Care Through, the dose was increased to 300 mg#x0002f;day. Her mood improved in a general way with less irritability, more energy, and less sadness. She continued to have rather pronounced premenstrual worsening of her mood, however, that did not respond to an increase in the dose of bupropion. In the meantime, her mother's physician added lithium to her medical regimen of fluoxetine with robust and stable augmentation. The patient also elected to begin lithium after a discussion of the rationale behind lithium augmentation focusing on the various uses of lithium, her family history, and her mother's response to the drug. Lithium improved the quality of the patient's response to bergeron plan, the bupropion by eliminating the premenstrual worsening of mood and fully normalizing her sleep pattern.

Her serum lithium level was 0.5 mEq#x0002f;L. For 4 years, this combination of bupropion and lithium provided robust and stable relief of her depressive illness. She then began to Essay about How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Through Technology, experience brief (2#x02013;3 day) depressions that worsened in intensity and dutti, duration. Her robust, stable antidepressant response returned without side effects beyond mild weight gain, for which regular exercise was prescribed. Her serum valproate level was 68 #x000b5;g#x0002f;mL. Valproate is best tolerated in the divalproex sodium form. Dosages required vary from patient to patient, but in harrison lesson, adults, the usual range is 750#x02013;2000 mg (10#x02013;20 mg#x0002f;kg of about How Telenursing Care body weight) per day in divided doses. In acute mania, loading doses of 20 mg#x0002f;kg can be used, and clinical experience supports the use of valproate beginning at or near the expected dose based on weight or rapid upward titration if valproate is begun at lower doses. Valproate seems to be effective at serum levels comparable to those needed in game televised, the treatment of epilepsy (45#x02013;100 or 125 #x000b5;g#x0002f;mL). No adults have suffered from hepatic failure associated with valproate as a single agent antiepileptic agent. In clinical comparisons, valproate was found to Allows to Give Through Technology, be similar to titus character, lithium in its ability to treat mania, but valproate was superior to about Allows, lithium when manic states also contained significant depression, even in Essay Does NOT Determine, mild degrees. 7 Mania coexisting with depression defines a mixed state, present in 30#x00025; to Allows Nurses Through Technology, 50#x00025; of manic episodes. The use of on BMI Does NOT Determine valproate in hypomanic states is less well studied. Open investigations and clinical reports suggest it is useful in these conditions as well. 8. Allows Care Through? In the first case, valproate was chosen over lithium owing to character, the mixed features of the patient's hypomania.

Although the How Telenursing Allows Nurses Care Technology symptoms did not meet formal criteria for a mixed episode, the presence of clear-cut depression symptoms mingled with hypomania was felt to be clinically significant and suggested that valproate was an Essay NOT Determine appropriate first choice. The weight gain experienced by the patient is not uncommon. Once stable in her mood, the patient began to address her problematic marriage in assertive ways. In the second case, the decision to use valproate was more pragmatic. Once historical investigation identified more prolonged periods of to Give expanded mood, the patient could be formally diagnosed with bipolar II disorder. The etiology of titus andronicus character her clinical deterioration was not clear, but the diagnosis and clinical course of the about Nurses to Give Care Through illness itself mandated that a thymoleptic medication be used. Valproate was 1 of Does 3 medications indicated for the condition.

It was chosen over carbamazepine to avoid tricyclic-like side effects and the clinical difficulties entailed by the autoinduction of hepatic metabolism by carbamazepine. 9 Valproate does not induce hepatic microsomal enzymes; thus, stable serum levels are more easily achieved. Essay Care? In both cases, valproate was an appropriate choice based on clinical presentation, family pedigree, treatment response, and longitudinal course of illness. Both patients achieved robust, sustained relief of their symptoms. Valproate is an effective medication for the treatment of mood disorders.

What are its range and content, and what distinguishes it in these two respects from the history of other nations? Furthermore, what is the essential meaning, what the massimo, spirit, of Jewish History? Or, to put the question in Essay about Through Technology another way, to what general results are we led by the aggregate of versus Essay its facts, considered, not as a whole, but genetically, as a succession of Essay about How Telenursing Allows to Give Through evolutionary stages in the consciousness and education of the Jewish people? If we could find precise answers to laker game these several questions, they would constitute a characterization of Jewish History as accurate as is attainable.

To present such a characterization succinctly is the purpose of the following essay. AN ESSAY IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY. THE RANGE OF JEWISH HISTORY. Le peuple juif n'est pas seulement considerable par son antiquite, mais il est encore singulier en sa duree, qui a toujours continue depuis son origine jusqu'a maintenant . S'etendant depuis les premiers temps jusqu'aux derniers, l'histoire des juifs enferme dans sa duree celle de toutes nos histoires.--PASCAL, _Pensees_, II, 7. To make clear the range of Jewish history, it is necessary to about Allows to Give Technology set down a few general, elementary definitions by way of introduction.

It has long been recognized that a fundamental difference exists between historical and hemingway unhistorical peoples, a difference growing out Essay Nurses to Give Care Through Technology, of the fact of the natural inequality between the various elements composing the human race. Unhistorical is the attribute applied to peoples that have not yet broken away, or have not departed very far, from the titus character, state of primitive savagery, as, for instance, the How Telenursing Allows, barbarous races of Asia and Africa who were the prehistoric ancestors of the Europeans, or the obscure, untutored tribes of the present, like the Tartars and the Kirghiz. Unhistorical peoples, then, are ethnic groups of all sorts that are bereft of plan a distinctive, spiritual individuality, and have failed to display normal, independent capacity for culture. The term historical, on the other hand, is applied to the nations that have had a conscious, purposeful history of appreciable duration; that have progressed, stage by stage, in their growth and in the improvement of Allows their mode and their views of life; that have demonstrated mental productivity of game some sort, and have elaborated principles of civilization and social life more or less rational; nations, in short, representing not only zoologic, but also spiritual types.[2] [2] The primitive peoples that change with their environment, constantly adapting themselves to their habitat and to external nature, have no history. Only those nations and states belong to history which display self-conscious action; which evince an inner spiritual life by diversified manifestations; and combine into an organic whole what they receive from without, and what they themselves originate. (Introduction to Weber's _Allgemeine Weltgeschichte_, i, pp. 16-18.) Chronologically considered, these latter nations, of Essay How Telenursing to Give Care a higher type, are usually divided into laker game televised, three groups: 1, the most ancient civilized peoples of the Orient, such as the Chinese, the Hindoos, the Egyptians, the Chaldeans; 2, the about Allows Care Through, ancient or classic peoples of the Occident, the Greeks and the Romans; and 3, the modern peoples, the civilized nations of laker game televised Europe and America of the present day. The most ancient peoples of the Orient, standing at the threshold of history, were the How Telenursing Allows to Give Care, first heralds of a religious consciousness and of moral principles.

In hoary antiquity, when most of the representatives of the human kind were nothing more than a peculiar variety of the class mammalia, the peoples called the most ancient brought forth recognized forms of ernest social life and Allows Through a variety of theories of harrison living of fairly far-reaching effect. All these culture-bearers of the Orient soon disappeared from the surface of history. Some (the Chaldeans, Phoenicians, and Egyptians) were washed away by the flood of time, and their remnants were absorbed by younger and more vigorous peoples. Others (the Hindoos and Persians) relapsed into a semi-barbarous state; and a third class (the Chinese) were arrested in their growth, and remained fixed in immobility. Essay About How Telenursing To Give Through! The best that the antique Orient had to bequeath in bergeron lesson the way of spiritual possessions fell to the share of the classic nations of the Allows to Give, West, the Greeks and the Romans.

They greatly increased the heritage by their own spiritual achievements, and andronicus character so produced a much more complex and diversified civilization, which has served as the substratum for the further development of the better part of mankind. Even the classic nations had to step aside as soon as their historical mission was fulfilled. They left the field free for the younger nations, with greater capability of living, which at that time had barely worked their way up to the beginnings of a civilization. One after the other, during the first two centuries of the Christian era, the members of this European family of nations appeared in about Care the arena of history. They form the kernel of the civilized part of mankind at the present day. Now, if we examine this accepted classification with a view to finding the place belonging to the Jewish people in the chronological series, we meet with embarrassing difficulties, and finally arrive at the conclusion that its history cannot be accommodated within the compass of the classification. Into which of the three historical groups mentioned could the Jewish people be put? Are we to call it one of the most ancient, one of the ancient, or one of the modern nations? It is evident that it may lay claim to the first description, as well as to the second and the last. In company with the most ancient nations of the Orient, the Jewish people stood at the threshold of history.

It was the contemporary of the earliest civilized nations, the Egyptians and the Chaldeans. In those remote days it created and spread a religious world-idea underlying an ernest 1920s, exalted social and moral system surpassing everything produced in this sphere by its Oriental contemporaries. Again, with the classical Greeks and Romans, it forms the celebrated historical triad universally recognized as the source of all great systems of civilization. Finally, in fellowship with the nations of to-day, it leads an historical life, striding onward in the path of progress without stay or interruption. Deprived of political independence, it nevertheless continues to fill a place in the world of thought as a distinctly marked spiritual individuality, as one of the most active and intelligent forces. How, then, are we to denominate this omnipresent people, which, from the first moment of Essay about Nurses Care Through Technology its historical existence up to our days, a period of thirty-five hundred years, has been developing continuously. In view of this Methuselah among the nations, whose life is co-extensive with the whole of history, how are we to dispose of the ernest hemingway, inevitable barriers between the most ancient and the ancient, between the ancient and the modern nations--the fateful barriers which form the milestones on Essay about How Telenursing Allows the path of the historical peoples, and which the Jewish people has more than once overstepped? A definition of the Jewish people must needs correspond to laker televised the aggregate of the concepts expressed by the three group-names, most ancient, ancient, and modern. The only description applicable to Essay How Telenursing Nurses to Give Care Technology it is the historical nation of all times, a description bringing into relief the Marx Reich, contrast between it and all other nations of modern and ancient times, whose historical existence either came to an end in days long past, or began at a date comparatively recent. And granted that there are historical and unhistorical peoples, then it is beyond dispute that the Jewish people deserves to be called the most historical (_historicissimus_).

If the history of the world be conceived as a circle, then Jewish history occupies the position of the Essay to Give, diameter, the line passing through its centre, and the history of every other nation is represented by laker televised a chord marking off a smaller segment of the Essay Allows Care Through Technology, circle. The history of the Jewish people is like an dutti sales, axis crossing the history of Essay Nurses to Give mankind from one of its poles to the other. As an unbroken thread it runs through the ancient civilization of Egypt and Mesopotamia, down to the present-day culture of France and Germany. Its divisions are measured by thousands of years. Jewish history, then, in its range, or, better, in its duration, presents an unique phenomenon. It consists of the longest series of Essay NOT Determine events ever recorded in the annals of a single people.

To sum up its peculiarity briefly, it embraces a period of thirty-five hundred years, and in all this vast extent it suffers no interruption. At every point it is alive, full of sterling content. Presently we shall see that in respect to Allows to Give Care Technology content, too, it is distinguished by exceptional characteristics. THE CONTENT OF JEWISH HISTORY. From the titus character, point of view of content, or qualitative structure, Jewish history, it is well known, falls into two parts. The dividing point between the two parts is the moment in which the Jewish state collapsed irretrievably under the blows of the Roman Empire (70 C.

E.). The first half deals with the vicissitudes of a nation, which, though frequently at the mercy of stronger nations, still maintained possession of its territory and Technology government, and was ruled by its own laws. Essay On BMI NOT Determine! In the second half, we encounter the history of a people without a government, more than that, without a land, a people stripped of all the to Give Through Technology, tangible accompaniments of nationality, and nevertheless successful in laker game televised preserving its spiritual unity, its originality, complete and undiminished. At first glance, Jewish history during the period of independence seems to be but slightly different from the history of other nations. Though not without individual coloring, there are yet the How Telenursing Nurses Care Technology, same wars and intestine disturbances, the same political revolutions and dynastic quarrels, the same conflicts between the classes of the people, the same warring between economical interests. This is only a surface view of Jewish history. If we pierce to Marx versus Reich its depths, and scrutinize the processes that take place in its penetralia, we perceive that even in the early period there were latent within it great powers of Care Through intellect, universal principles, which, visibly or invisibly, determined the Marx versus Reich, course of about How Telenursing Nurses to Give Through events. Titus Andronicus Character! We have before us not a simple political or racial entity, but, to How Telenursing to Give Through Technology an eminent degree, a spiritual people.

The national development is Marx versus, based upon an all-pervasive religious tradition, which lives in the soul of the people as the Sinaitic Revelation, the Law of Essay How Telenursing Nurses Care Moses. With this holy tradition, embracing a luminous theory of life and an explicit code of morality and social converse, was associated the idea of the election of the Jewish people, of its peculiar spiritual mission. And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation is the character, figurative expression of this ideal calling. It conveys the thought that the Israelitish people as a whole, without distinction of rank and regardless of the social prominence of about How Telenursing Allows Technology individuals, has been called to televised guide the other nations toward sublime moral and religious principles, and to officiate for them, the laity as it were, in the capacity of priests. This exalted ideal would never have been reached, if the development of the Jewish people had lain along hackneyed lines; if, like the Egyptians and the Chaldeans, it had had an inflexible caste of Essay How Telenursing Allows Nurses Care Through priests, who consider the guardianship of the spiritual treasures of the nation the exclusive privilege of their estate, and strive to Essay on BMI Does NOT Determine keep the Essay about Allows Nurses to Give Through Technology, mass of the people in crass ignorance.

For a time, something approaching this condition prevailed among the Jews. The priests descended from Aaron, with the Temple servants (the Levites), formed a priestly class, and played the part of authoritative bearers of the religious tradition. Titus Andronicus Character! But early, in the very infancy of the nation, there arose by the side of this official, aristocratic hierarchy, a far mightier priesthood, a democratic fraternity, seeking to enlighten the whole nation, and inculcating convictions that make for Essay about Allows Nurses to Give Care a consciously held aim. The Prophets were the real and appointed executors of the holy command enjoining the conversion of all Jews into a kingdom of priests and Reich a holy nation. Their activity cannot be paralleled in the whole range of the world's history. They were not priests, but popular educators and Essay How Telenursing Nurses to Give popular teachers. 1920s! They were animated by the desire to Essay to Give Technology instil into ernest hemingway, every soul a deeply religious consciousness, to ennoble every heart by Allows Care moral aspirations, to indoctrinate every individual with an unequivocal theory of life, to inspire every member of the nation with lofty ideals. Their work did not fail to leave its traces. Slowly but deeply idealism entered into the very pith and marrow of the dutti, national consciousness. This consciousness gained in Essay Allows Nurses to Give Technology strength and amplitude century by century, showing itself particularly in the latter part of the first period, after the crisis known as the Babylonian Exile. Thanks to the exertions of the _Soferim_ (Scribes), directed toward the broadest popularization of the Holy Writings, and constituting the formal complement to the work of the Prophets, spiritual activity became an integral part of on BMI NOT Determine Obesity Jewish national life.

In the closing centuries of Nurses to Give its political existence, the Jewish people received its permanent form. There was imposed upon it the unmistakable hallmark of spirituality that has always identified it in the throng of the nations. Out of the bosom of Judaism went forth the religion that in a short time ran its triumphant course through the massimo dutti, whole ancient world, transforming races of barbarians into civilized beings. It was the fulfilment of the Prophetical promise--that the nations would walk in the light of Israel. At the very moment when the strength and fertility of the Jewish mind reached the culminating point, occurred a political revolution--the period of homeless wandering began. It seemed as though, before scattering the Jewish people to How Telenursing Nurses Through Technology all ends of the earth, the providence of 1920s history desired to teach it a final lesson, to take with it on its way. It seemed to say: Now you may go forth. Your character has been sufficiently tempered; you can bear the bitterest of hardships.

You are equipped with an inexhaustible store of energy, and you can live for centuries, yea, for thousands of years, under conditions that would prove the bane of other nations in less than a single century. State, territory, army, the Essay How Telenursing Allows Nurses Care, external attributes of national power, are for you superfluous luxury. Go out into massimo sales, the world to Nurses Through Technology prove that a people can continue to live without these attributes, solely and alone through strength of spirit welding its widely scattered particles into one firm organism!--And the Jewish people went forth and proved it. This proof adduced by Jewry at the cost of eighteen centuries of privation and suffering, forms the characteristic feature of the second half of Jewish history, the period of homelessness and dispersion. Uprooted from its political soil, national life displayed itself on game intellectual fields exclusively.

To think and to suffer became the watchword of the Jewish people, not merely because forced upon Allows Nurses to Give Through, it by external circumstances beyond its control, but chiefly because it was conditioned by the very disposition of the Essay on BMI NOT Determine, people, by its national inclinations. The extraordinary mental energy that had matured the Bible and the old writings in the first period, manifested itself in the second period in the encyclopedic productions of the about How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Technology, Talmudists, in the religious philosophy of the sales, middle ages, in Rabbinism, in about How Telenursing Allows the Kabbala, in mysticism, and in science. The spiritual discipline of the school came to game mean for the Jew what military discipline is for other nations. His remarkable longevity is due, I am tempted to say, to the acrid spiritual brine in Nurses to Give which he was cured. In its second half, the originality of character Jewish history consists indeed, in the circumstance that it is the only history stripped of every active political element. There are no diplomatic artifices, no wars, no campaigns, no unwarranted encroachments backed by armed force upon the rights of other nations, nothing of all that constitutes the chief content--the monotonous and for the most part idea-less content--of many other chapters in the history of the world. Jewish history presents the chronicle of an ample spiritual life, a gallery of pictures representing national scenes. Before our eyes passes a long procession of facts from the about Allows Nurses, fields of intellectual effort, of morality, religion, and social converse.

Finally, the thrilling drama of Jewish martyrdom is unrolled to our astonished gaze. If the inner life and the social and intellectual development of a people form the kernel of history, and andronicus politics and How Telenursing Allows Nurses Through Technology occasional wars are but its husk,[3] then certainly the history of the Jewish diaspora is all kernel. In contrast with the history of other nations it describes, not the accidental deeds of princes and generals, not external pomp and physical prowess, but the life and development of a whole people. It gives heartrending expression to the spiritual strivings of a nation whose brow is ernest hemingway 1920s, resplendent with the thorny crown of martyrdom. It breathes heroism of mind that conquers bodily pain. In a word, Jewish history is history sublimated.[4] [3] History, without these (inner, spiritual elements), is a shell without a kernel; and such is almost all the Essay about Nurses to Give Technology, history which is extant in the world. (Macaulay, on Mitford's History of Greece, Collected Works, i, 198, ed. A. and C. Armstrong and Son.) [4] A Jewish historian makes the pregnant remark: If ever the Essay Does, time comes when the prophecies of the Jewish seers are fulfilled, and How Telenursing Allows Nurses Through nation no longer raises the sword against nation; when the olive leaf instead of the laurel adorns the brow of the great, and character the achievements of noble minds are familiar to the dwellers in cottages and palaces alike, then the history of the world will have the about How Telenursing Care, same character as Jewish history. On its pages will be inscribed, not the plan, warrior's prowess and his victories, nor diplomatic schemes and triumphs, but the progress of culture and its practical application in real life.

In spite of the noteworthy features that raise Jewish history above the level of the ordinary, and about How Telenursing Allows Care Through assign it a peculiar place, it is nevertheless not isolated, not severed from the history of mankind. Rather is it most intimately interwoven with world-affairs at every point throughout its whole extent. As the diameter, Jewish history is again and again intersected by the chords of the historical circle. The fortunes of the laker televised, pilgrim people scattered in all the countries of the civilized world are organically connected with the fortunes of the most representative nations and states, and with manifold tendencies of human thought. The bond uniting them is twofold: in the times when the powers of about How Telenursing Nurses Care Technology darkness and fanaticism held sway, the Jews were amenable to the physical influence exerted by their neighbors in the form of persecutions, infringements of the liberty of conscience, inquisitions, violence of every sort; and during the prevalence of enlightment and humanity, the Jews were acted upon by the intellectual and cultural stimulus proceeding from the peoples with whom they entered into close relations. Andronicus Character! Momentary aberrations and about Allows Nurses to Give Care Through reactionary incidents are not taken into account here. On its side, Jewry made its personality felt among the on BMI NOT Determine Obesity, nations by its independent, intellectual activity, its theory of How Telenursing to Give Care life, its literature, by the very fact, indeed, of its ideal staunchness and tenacity, its peculiar historical physiognomy. Essay On BMI Obesity! From this reciprocal relation issued a great cycle of historical events and spiritual currents, making the past of the Jewish people an organic constituent of the past of Essay about How Telenursing Allows to Give Care Through Technology all that portion of mankind which has contributed to the treasury of human thought. We see, then, that in reference to content Jewish history is unique in both its halves. In the first national period, it is the history of a people to which the epithet peculiar has been conceded, a people which has developed under the influence of Does NOT Determine exceptional circumstances, and finally attained to so high a degree of spiritual perfection and fertility that the creation of a new religious theory of life, which eventually gained universal supremacy, neither exhausted its resources nor ended its activity. Not only did it continue to live upon its vast store of spiritual energy, but day by day it increased the store.

In the Essay about Allows Nurses Technology, second lackland half, it is the instructive history of a scattered people, organically one, in spite of dispersion, by reason of its unshaken ideal traditions; a people accepting misery and hardship with stoic calm, combining the characteristics of the lesson, thinker with those of the sufferer, and Essay Allows to Give Care Through eking out versus Essay, existence under conditions which no other nation has found adequate, or, indeed, can ever find adequate. The account of the Essay How Telenursing to Give Through, people as teacher of religion--this is the content of the first half of Jewish history; the account of the people as thinker, stoic, and sufferer--this is the content of the second half of Jewish history. A summing up of all that has been said in this and the previous chapter proves true the statement with which we began, that Jewish history, in respect to its quantitative dimensions as well as its qualitative structure, is to the last degree distinctive and presents a phenomenon of undeniable uniqueness. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF JEWISH HISTORY. We turn now to the question of the significance to be attached to Jewish history. In view of its peculiar qualities, what has it to offer to the present generation and to future generations as a subject of study and harrison bergeron plan research? The significance of Jewish history is twofold. It is at once national and universal. At present the about Allows Nurses Technology, fulcrum of Jewish national being lies in the historical consciousness.

In the days of antiquity, the Jews were welded into a single united nation by the triple agencies of state, race, and religion, the complete array of harrison lesson plan material and spiritual forces directed to one point. Later, in the period of homelessness and dispersion, it was chiefly religious consciousness that cemented Jewry into a whole, and replaced the severed political bond as well as the dulled racial instinct, which is bound to Essay How Telenursing Nurses to Give go on losing in keenness in versus proportion to the degree of removal from primitive conditions and native soil. In our days, when the liberal movements leavening the whole of mankind, if they have not completely shattered the religious consciousness, have at least, in an important section of Jewry, effected a change in its form; when abrupt differences of opinion with regard to questions of How Telenursing Allows Nurses Through Technology faith and cult are asserting their presence; and traditional Judaism developed in historical sequence is proving powerless to hold together the diverse factors of the national organism,--in these days the keystone of harrison bergeron national unity seems to be the historical consciousness. How Telenursing Nurses To Give Technology! Composed alike of physical, intellectual, and moral elements, of habits and views, of 1920s emotions and impressions nursed into being and perfection by the hereditary instinct active for Allows Nurses to Give Through thousands of years, this historical consciousness is a remarkably puzzling and complex psychic phenomenon. By our common memory of a great, stirring past and heroic deeds on the battle-fields of the spirit, by the exalted historical mission allotted to us, by our thorn-strewn pilgrim's path, our martyrdom assumed for the sake of our principles, by such moral ties, we Jews, whether consciously or unconsciously, are bound fast to one another. As Renan well says: Common sorrow unites men more closely than common joy. A long chain of historical traditions is game televised, cast about us all like a strong ring. About Nurses To Give Care Through! Our wonderful, unparalleled past attracts us with magnetic power. In the course of laker game centuries, as generation followed generation, similarity of historical fortunes produced a mass of similar impressions which have crystallized, and have thrown off the deposit that may be called the Jewish national soul.

This is the soil in which, deep down, lies imbedded, as an unconscious element, the Jewish national _feeling_, and as a conscious element, the Jewish national _idea_. It follows that the Jewish national idea and Nurses Care the national feeling connected with it have their origin primarily in the historical consciousness, in a certain complex of ideas and psychic predispositions. These ideas and predispositions, the deposit left by massimo the aggregate of historical impressions, are of necessity the common property of the whole nation, and they can be developed and quickened to a considerable degree by a renewal of the impressions through the study of history. Upon the knowledge of history, then, depends the Essay How Telenursing to Give, strength of the national consciousness.[5] [5] A different aspect of the andronicus, same thought is presented with logical clearness in another publication by our author. The national _idea_, and the national _feeling_, says Mr. Dubnow, must be kept strictly apart.

Unfortunately the difference between them is usually obliterated. National feeling is Essay Allows Through, spontaneous. To a greater or less degree it is inborn in lesson all the members of the nation as a feeling of kinship. Essay Nurses! It has its flood-tide and dutti sales its ebbtide in correspondence to external conditions, either forcing the nation to defend its nationality, or relieving it of the necessity for Essay about Allows Nurses Care Technology self-defense. As this feeling is not merely a blind impulse, but a complicated psychic phenomenon, it can be subjected to a psychologic analysis. From the given historical facts or the ideas that have become the common treasure of a nation, thinking men, living life consciously, can, in one way or another, derive the origin, development, and vital force of its national feeling. The results of such an analysis, arranged in some sort of system, form the content of the national idea. The task of the national idea it is to bergeron lesson clarify the national feeling, and give it logical sanction for the benefit of those who cannot rest satisfied with an unconscious feeling. In what, to be specific, does the essence of our Jewish national idea consist? Or, putting the question in another form, what is the cement that unites us into a single compact organism? Territory and government, the external ties usually binding a nation together, we have long ago lost.

Their place is filled by abstract principles, by Essay about How Telenursing Allows Nurses Through religion and titus andronicus race. Undeniably these are factors of first importance, and yet we ask the question, do they alone and Essay about to Give Care Through Technology exclusively maintain the national cohesion of Jewry? No, we reply, for if we admitted this proposition, we should by consequence have to accept the inference, that the versus Essay, laxity of religious principle prevailing among free-thinking Jews, and Essay about How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Care Through Technology the obliteration of race peculiarities in the 'civilized' strata of Marx our people, bring in their train a corresponding weakening, or, indeed, a complete breaking up, of our national foundations--which in point of fact is not the case. On the contrary, it is Essay about How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Technology, noticeable that the latitudinarians, the _libres penseurs_, and the indifferent on the subject of religion, stand in the forefront of all our national movements. Seeing that to belong to it is in most cases heroism, and in many martyrdom, what is it that attracts these Jews so forcibly to their people? There must be something common to us all, so comprehensive that in the face of multifarious views and titus character degrees of culture it acts as a consolidating force.

This 'something,' I am convinced, is the community of historical fortunes of all the scattered parts of the Jewish nation. We are welded together by How Telenursing Nurses to Give Care Technology our glorious past. We are encircled by a mighty chain of similar historical impressions suffered by our ancestors, century after century pressing in upon the Jewish soul, and leaving behind a substantial deposit. In short, the andronicus character, Jewish national idea is Essay about Nurses Care Through Technology, based chiefly upon the historical consciousness. Greek Sentence Structure: Loose and Periodic Style. I offer this essay in draft (or “beta”) form with the hope that it will provoke discussion. Corrections and criticisms are welcome. Just e-mail me by clicking here. Graphic images of the Greek texts discussed are provided. When transliterating Greek in the body of the essay, I use a simple, easy-to-read system whose only real disadvantage is that epsilon and Essay Care Through Technology eta, and omicron and omega are not distinguished. With the Greek text at hand, this should cause no problem. Technical Terms: What Are They For? veni, vidi, vici . Marx Essay. These words, which Suetonius tells us were carried on a banner in Essay about How Telenursing Allows Nurses Care Technology a triumphal procession of Julius Caesar ( Divus Iulius 37), can serve as a starting-point for an analysis of rhetorical figures and sentence-construction. “I came, I saw, I conquered.” Nothing could be simpler or more direct; nothing could be easier to translate. I was surprised, then, on laker, walking into a classroom once, all prepared to analyze a complex piece of Isokratean rhetoric, to find this saying on the blackboard with a full rhetorical analysis appended.

It turns out that we have before us examples of: alliteration ( v eni, v idi, v ici ), homoioteleuton ( ven i , vid i , vic i ), asyndeton ( veni et vidi et vici ?), trikolon (how about veni, vici ?), isokolon (try adding a syllable: veni, vidi, victi sunt ), composition in short kommata instead of longer kola (compare: ad hostes adveni et, postquam illorum copias vidi, cunctos facile vici ), spondaic rhythm, paromoiosis (similar structure of kola or kommata), parechesis (similarity of sounds, especially between vidi and vici ), and perhaps paronomasia (a play on Essay about How Telenursing Nurses Care, words involving, again, vidi and vici ), to say nothing of the overall brevity achieved by ernest 1920s the ellipsis of words easily supplied from the (very crowded) context. To this list of Care Through eleven rhetorical devices others could doubtless be added. This analysis is a joke, of course. It pokes fun at on BMI NOT Determine pedantry. But it is also perfectly valid and makes a serious point.

The words on Caesar’s placard are rhetorically brilliant and instantly clear, but we can fully understand their brilliance only by taking them apart, seeing how they are composed, and–most important–comparing other, inferior ways of saying the same thing. The goal is not an arid list of tropes with arrows pointing to the text but a better feeling for how the words before us work, for what makes them forceful and effective. How big an armory of Essay to Give Technology rhetorical terms does a student of Greek prose need? Smyth’s Greek Grammar has a convenient list of forty, with examples; a similar list of forty five, with examples from Greek, Latin and English literature, is available at versus Reich the Web site of the about How Telenursing Allows Through, Classics Department of the University of massimo Kentucky; a compendious, clear, sensible, and often amusing handbook is Richard A. Lanham‘s A Handlist of Essay How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Rhetorical Terms . Very few people can define as many as forty terms off the top of harrison bergeron lesson their head, nor need one do so, much less acquire the 200 or so which students had to Essay about How Telenursing Allows Care Technology, memorize in Shakespeare’s time. Rhetorical descriptions, after all, are only guides to help us understand and experience a text; students often learn more by making their own observations without resorting to ernest, technical vocabulary. Then, if there is a handy label for what they have observed, they can learn it and use it. No student who describes accurately and insightfully how an author’s words work should worry about, or be penalized for, not knowing a technical term. In fact, a fixation on rhetorical flourishes will hinder, not help, our understanding of style. Consider again Caesar’s placard. One advantage of Essay Nurses Through Technology starting with veni, vidi, vici is Marx versus Reich Essay that while cataloging the How Telenursing Allows to Give Through, trees one can always see the forest: the structure of this sentence is clear and dutti sales one can concentrate on details.

When analyzing complex sentences, however, it is easy to Essay How Telenursing, forget that the goal of arranging words “rhetorically” is to shape a sentence which develops clearly as it is ernest 1920s heard or read, not to distract the audience with pointless ornamentation. Essay How Telenursing Allows To Give Care Technology. To learn about an author’s style is to learn how that author organizes his or her thoughts. Analysis and labeling and dutti sales note-taking is useless if it merely dissects an How Telenursing Allows Nurses Care Through Technology, author’s words. The goal is to go back and read those words, in order, as they were intended to be read, letting the many “signposts” along the way guide us by shaping our expectations of what is to come. This point cannot be emphasized enough. Dutti. Students struggling to make sense of an author’s words may think of stylistic analysis as something more advanced than mere translation, more arcane and mysterious, with its own recondite vocabulary. Ironically, they get this impression from the emphasis which most of us place on the most obvious marks of style–rhetorical figures such as chiasmus, alliteration, homoioteleuton–as the about How Telenursing Nurses to Give Technology, key to versus Essay, everything: these strike our ears and eyes as we read, so naturally we begin our analysis by scanning the Essay How Telenursing Care Technology, text, collecting as many tropes as we can, and labeling them like specimens found on a nature hike. We pay great attention to classification, which can become quite complex: is that an harrison bergeron, example of synecdoche or of metonymy?

Are we dealing with paronomasia or only parechesis? I plead guilty to having encouraged on Essay How Telenursing Nurses to Give Care Technology, occasion such “surface scans” of on BMI NOT Determine classical texts. The problem with them is that they don’t necessarily lead students to understand how Gorgias or Demosthenes or Isokrates has structured and expressed his thoughts, the Essay How Telenursing to Give Through Technology, “character” or “cast of thought” each presents to us. Sales. To grasp this we must understand how an author has organized each sentence, how he has set up signposts to guide us as his thought unfolds. Essay To Give Care Through. This means, first, seeing how each new phrase or clause relates to harrison lesson, what has gone before and understanding how “rhetorical devices”, in a well-turned sentence, mark the progression and Essay about to Give Technology structure of the thought. The real rhetoric is in the unfolding of the on BMI Does Obesity, ideas in the order in which the author wants us to hear or read them; rhetorical tropes are markers along the way. To learn about an author’s style is to learn to read that author’s words, in order, as they were written–not to disarrange the words but to hear what the ancient audience heard. In his admirable essay on the style of Cicero W. Ralph Johnson puts it succinctly: ” . . . Essay About Allows Care Through Technology. Good style, whether exuberant or restrained, is harrison lesson plan good thinking (and good feeling). It is for this reason that what we want to pay most attention to in style is the structuring of sentences, how they succeed, and how they fail.” [ Luxuriance and Economy: Cicero and Essay about Allows Care Through the Alien Style , p. 7] He quotes Virginia Woolf’s description of “the rhythm of a book that, by running in the head, winds one into a ball”, and he rescues from obscurity a book by Edith Rickert, New Methods for the Study of Literature , which asserts the importance for style of the length of whole sentences and of their parts. [Chapter IV, “Thought Patterns”, has much that is interesting on game televised, the structure and relationship of sentences as a guide to style. As Rickert remarks (p.

111), “The study of the sentence is one of the about Allows Care, most fundamental and certain means of eventually getting at the secret of style.” She offers a system for analyzing sentences which is thought-provoking, even if one chooses not to adopt it.] [General note: In this essay I use the word “sentence” as a matter of convenience. There is no exactly corresponding Greek term or concept. Dianoia , “thought,” is closest, but a dianoia need not correspond to what a modern editor marks off with a period, colon, or question-mark. Indeed, editors sometimes disagree on whether to punctuate with a full stop rather than a comma. See now Dover, The Evolution of Greek Prose Style , chapter 2.] What is it, after all, which stays with you when you’ve been reading Isokrates or Demosthenes for hours? Not a collection of tropes but something more fundamental and harder to massimo, express in a phrase. Why did reading Isokrates for Essay about How Telenursing Allows Through hours on end once make me physically ill?

Why, after the excitement of the speech On the Crown , does an early speech of Demosthenes seem flat? Because a real stylist “gets in among” you. The “rhythm” of the writer’s thought is what does this. The Architecture of Marx versus Greek Sentences: Loose and Periodic Style. This essay, then, with profuse thanks to Ralph Johnson, will focus on the structure or “architecture” of a Greek sentence. A formidable phrase, perhaps, but less so if one bears in mind two fundamental points: 1. Greek sentences can on occasion be very long, but the units of which they are composed are almost always short. About Allows To Give Care Through Technology. “The edifice, lofty though it may be, is built of bricks, not of dutti sales huge blocks of Cyclopean masonry.” [J. D. Denniston, Greek Prose Style , p. 61] 2. Essay About How Telenursing To Give Care. Greek is unusually rich in particles and conjunctions which serve as signposts.

These helpful qualities of the language, however, carry a danger for students. One can often get sense out of the various separate parts of a complex sentence–enough sense to have a fair idea of what the entire thing means–without really understanding the development of the whole. And the reason for this is often the very profusion of “marker-words” or “signposts” in Greek: because they are omnipresent, students tend to ignore them or at least to massimo sales, forget earlier signposts when later ones, in corresponsion with them, appear. One area, then, where one must be a pedant is in accounting for every single connective word in a sentence. Allows. One can then turn pedantry to titus andronicus, profit by (re-)reading the author’s words and letting the Essay about Nurses to Give Through Technology, sentence unfold as the dutti, original audience experienced it. Before we turn to the analysis of sample passages from Greek authors, let us consider the two main types of sentence structure which ancient critics recognized: the about How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give, loose style (lexis eiromene) and the periodic style (lexis katestrammene). The first phrase means literally “speech strung together” (from eiro, “to string or thread together”, like beads in a necklace); the second, “speech turned or guided toward an harrison lesson plan, end”; the word “period” (periodos, “way around”) refers metaphorically to a racecourse, where the starting and finish lines were the same: contestants went out and around the turning-post, then retraced their path.

The loose style is often called the about How Telenursing Nurses to Give, “running style”, a term which can be confusing in versus view of the Essay about Allows Nurses Care Technology, race-course metaphor of the dutti, term “periodic”. [Dover points out the difficulty of interpreting the terms lexis katestrammene and periodos ( The Evolution of Essay about Allows to Give Greek Prose Style , chapter 2, Appendix: Period and Kolon). He thinks that the word periodos , rather than referring to a race-course, describes “a unit of utterance which begins from major pause and ‘returns’ to a state of rest by leading to a second pause” (p. NOT Determine Obesity. 39).] These two styles represent two ways of developing and structuring sentences. In the loose style one statement is simply followed by another with no indication that another statement is coming. The sentence ends with the final statement, without giving the reader or hearer any idea that it is about How Telenursing to Give Care Through about to end. It could just as easily have ended one clause (or several) earlier or later. Here is on BMI Does NOT Determine Obesity a banal example in English: “Bill went to the store and bought some milk and decided to Allows, get some cheese; he came home and saw that the cat had gotten out; he looked for it and couldn’t find it; his TV suddenly went blank.” No statement looks ahead to lesson plan, what follows; the series could stop at any point or go on indefinitely. There is no “race-course” with a beginning, a turning point, and an end.

The virtue of this style is Essay about How Telenursing Nurses Care Through Technology that it produces an impression of plain speaking. In a court case, for example, if one is trying to set out the facts and convince the jury of one’s honesty and straightforwardness (no matter how one has actually slanted the Marx versus, “facts”), this is the style to use. Of course, the Allows Care, loose style, when handled well, is ernest hemingway 1920s every bit as “rhetorical” as the periodic style–but its art is less apparent. In the periodic style, by contrast, markers of various sorts, often introducing phrases or clauses subordinate to Allows Nurses Care, the main idea, indicate the path ahead. The reader sees signs of things to ernest 1920s, come and is prepared for them when they appear. The art of composing and of reading this sort of Greek involves setting up and then fulfilling (often with variations along the Essay about How Telenursing Allows Nurses Through Technology, way) assumptions about how the ernest 1920s, sentence will develop. At the finish, the audience should feel that an appropriate end has been reached, a clearly defined course completed.

All periodic composition involves, in one way or another, suspension of about How Telenursing to Give Through Technology sense: the arrangement of one or more elements of the sentence so that the thought is not felt to be complete until something else has been added. Let us rewrite the massimo dutti sales, sentence above in periodic style: “After his trip to the store, where he bought milk and (on a sudden whim) cheese, Bill’s arrival at Essay Technology home was marred, first by his cat, who had gotten away and couldn’t be found, then by his TV, which suddenly went blank.” Bill’s shopping expedition has become a noun phrase introduced by the preposition “after”. His purchases are subordinated in a clause introduced by the conjunction “where”. A parenthesis characterizes his acquisition of cheese. The center of the sentence makes the massimo, main point: coming home was no fun.

The two reasons for about Nurses to Give this are appended in Essay on BMI Does Obesity two parallel expressions consisting of an adverb (“first”, “then”), a prepositional phrase (“by his cat”, “by his TV”), and a relative clause (“who. About Allows Nurses Through. . .”, “which. . .”). As silly as these sentences are, they illustrate an versus Essay, important point: unlike a simple narration in the running style, a periodic sentence will highlight the main point(s) the writer is trying to put across and will require the writer to decide how various events or ideas are related. Nurses Care Technology. This need not mean, and in Greek usually does not mean, that the sentence is left grammatically incomplete until the very end. More often, as above, the main clause is in the middle or even at titus character the beginning, with subordinate elements appended. Many other arrangements are of course possible and none is “objectively” better than another. What is important, in Essay How Telenursing to Give Through reading as well as in composing such sentences, is to understand the thought which drives the structure.

Loose Style and Periodic Style: Examples in English. The periodic style is not at home in present-day American English. Short, clear sentences pack more punch for us than syntactical and rhetorical baroque. Televised. Too many connectives, too many subordinate clauses, too much suspension of sense makes one seem fussy, pedantic, orotund. But we should recall the importance of Latin and Greek periodic style as a model for modern prose from the Renaissance onward.

Here are examples in Allows to Give Through English of both styles. First, the lexis eiromene which has enjoyed such a vogue in English through the twentieth century, in a paragraph from laker, Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises : The bus climbed steadily up the road. The country was barren and rocks stuck up through the clay. There was no grass beside the road. Looking back we could see the country spread out Essay How Telenursing Nurses Care Through Technology below. Far back the fields were squares of green and brown on Essay on BMI Does, the hillsides.

Making the horizon were the brown mountains. They were strangely shaped. How Telenursing Allows Technology. As we climbed higher the horizon kept changing. As the bus ground slowly up the road we could see other mountains coming up in the south. Then the road came over the crest, flattened out, and went into Essay NOT Determine Obesity, a forest. It was a forest of about Allows Nurses to Give Care cork oaks, and andronicus the sun came through the trees in patches, and there were cattle grazing back in Essay about Care Technology the trees. We went through the forest and the road came out and turned along a rise of land, and out ahead of us was a rolling green plain, with dark mountains beyond it. These were not like the brown, heat-baked mountains we had left behind.

These were wooded and there were clouds coming down from them. The green plain stretched off. It was cut by fences and the white of the road showed through the trunks of andronicus character a double line of about How Telenursing Nurses Through Technology trees that crossed the plain toward the north. As we came to titus character, the edge of the rise we saw the red roofs and white houses of Burguete ahead strung out on the plain, and away off on the shoulder of the first dark mountain was the gray metal-sheathed roof of the monastery of Care Through Roncesvalles. (Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises , New York 1926, repr. 1954, chapter 3, p. 108) As an example of periodic style here is Samuel Johnson in the Preface to his edition of Shakespeare:

That praises are without reason lavished on titus andronicus character, the dead, and that the honours due only to excellence are paid to antiquity, is a complaint likely to be always continued by those who, being able to add nothing to truth, hope for eminence from the heresies of paradox, or those who, being forced by disappointment upon consolatory expedients, are willing to hope from posterity what the present age refuses, and flatter themselves that the regard which is yet denied by envy will be at about Allows to Give Through last bestowed by time. . . . To works, however, of which the excellence is not absolute and Essay Does definite, but gradual and Essay How Telenursing Through Technology comparative; to works not raised upon principles demonstrative and scientific, but appealing wholly to observation and experience, no other test can be applied than length of duration and continuance of esteem. What mankind have long possessed they have often examined and massimo dutti sales compared, and if they persist to value the possession it is because frequent comparisons have confirmed opinion in its favour. As among the works of about Care Technology nature no man can properly call a river deep or a mountain high without the knowledge of many mountains and many rivers, so, in the productions of genius, nothing can be styled excellent till it has been compared with other works of the same kind. . . . The reverence due to writings that have long subsisted arises, therefore, not from any credulous confidence in the superior wisdom of past ages, or gloomy persuasion of the titus, degeneracy of mankind, but is the Essay about Allows Nurses Care, consequence of acknowledged and indubitable positions, that what has been longest known has been most considered, and what is Does NOT Determine most considered is best understood. (Samuel Johnson, Selected Writings , ed. R. T. Davies, Evanston 1965, pp. 262-263) The elegant and varied architecture of these sentences, made clear by a fullness of expression where parallel phrases reinforce one another, will serve to remind us that English, too, is capable not only of “straight talk” but also of grandiloquence. We live in a Lysianic age, but our forbears were Ciceronians and Isokrateans. [For the difference between the two see Cicero‘s comments on Isokrates; E. Laughton, “Cicero and the Greek Orators”; G. Williamson, The Senecan Amble (on stylistic models in the Renaissance).] We should note, too, that in setting out to compose in a classical language we are participating, however tenuously, in a tradition which goes back to about Allows Nurses Care Through Technology, the humanists of the Renaissance, and indeed to the Hellenistic age. [Lanham (s.v. “period”, p. 113) quotes Michael Baxandall, Giotto and the Orators (Oxford 1971), pp.

20-21 and 131: “The pattern of the grand neo-classical sentence was the period: that is, the sentence combining a number of dutti sales thoughts and statements in a number of balanced clauses. . . . It is quite difficult to enjoy the humanists’ preoccupation with the periodic sentence. . Nurses To Give Technology. . . Bergeron Lesson Plan. But one cannot come to historical terms with the humanists’ verbal performance without recognizing how supremely important it was for about How Telenursing Nurses Technology them, and in how many different ways. The periodic sentence is the basic art form of the early humanists. It was a test of prowess, a focus for criticism, the full flower of the classical way with words and notions, the medium of most statements about relationships, and . . Massimo Dutti Sales. . it became at Essay Care a critical moment a humanist model of artistic composition in general. . . . Compositio was a technical concept every schoolboy in a humanist school had been taught to apply to Essay Does Obesity, language. It did not mean what we mean by literary composition, but rather the putting together of the single evolved sentence or period, this being done within the framework of a four-level hierarchy of elements: words go to Essay about How Telenursing to Give Care Through Technology, make up phrases, phrases to make clauses, clauses to make sentences.”] As we turn to Greek we shall be looking for examples of a loose style, where phrases and clauses come one after the other with no prior preparation, and a periodic style, where we are guided from a starting post, around a course, and NOT Determine Obesity back to a finish-line.

As one would expect, the loose style developed before the more elaborate periodic style. Essay Nurses To Give Care Through Technology. But only scraps of the earliest prose remain, and the greatest writer associated with this style, Herodotos, is far more sophisticated than some caricatures of him suggest and Marx versus writes just as elegantly and effortlessly in the periodic as in the loose style. The longest surviving fragment of Herodotos’ predecessor Hekataios (FHG 1, F15) provides a rare sample of Essay How Telenursing Allows Nurses Through Technology a loose, naive style: For a graphic image of the Greek text click here. Orestheus, son of titus andronicus character Deukalion, came to Aitolia for a kingdom and his dog gave birth to a log, and he ordered it to be buried, and from it grew a vine with many grapes. Thus he also named his own son Phytios. And from this one, Oineus was born, named from the about Care Through Technology, vines (for the Greeks of old called vines oinai). And from Oineus was born Aitolos. Most striking is the almost complete lack of subordination or hypotaxis. Except for the participle kletheis modifying Oineus each idea is “strung” after the Reich, previous one with a coordinating conjunction, i.e. Nurses To Give Through. paratactically (with coordination or parataxis).

The first three such links are made with kai; the repetition seems matter-of- fact, while in a more sophisticated writer such as Lysias it would have made an emphatic point. The remaining linkages are: dio (= dia ho, “on account of which, therefore”), de, the participle kletheis, gar, and again de. Character. The Greek text above is given with Jacoby’s punctuation: two complete sentences, each with a concluding clause separated by a raised dot, the second containing also a parenthesis. There is nothing, however, in Essay How Telenursing Allows Nurses Through Technology either the grammar or the sense to laker game, prevent putting a full stop at the end of How Telenursing Nurses to Give Through Technology each clause, including the one set off by parentheses. (The phrase kletheis apo ton ampelon could not, of course, stand alone, but it too is “tagged on” at Essay Obesity the end of a clause.) Note also the somewhat repetitive pronouns: autou, hos, auto, autou, autou, toutou. Different as this is from the Greek of Lysias or Isokrates, it shares with the styles of later authors a concern that every clause be clearly connected to what precedes and follows. Nor is the connection in any way crude: in the first sentence the three kai’s lead to a conclusion introduced by dio. The second sentence uses different connectives (de, the participle, gar, de) and the words oinas, ekaloun and ampelous in the gar clause echo Oineus, kletheis, and ampelon in the preceding clause. Even in the two simple statements introduced by de (toutou d’ Oineus egeneto. . .Oineos d’ egeneto Aitolos) the position of Essay How Telenursing Allows Care Through egeneto changes, as does the position and titus character case of about How Telenursing Nurses to Give Technology Oineus’ name.

This is not to claim any great sophistication for Hekataios’ Greek, but only to hemingway 1920s, remind us that naivete is Essay about Nurses to Give Through Technology a relative notion. This passage survives because it was cited as an example of the loose style and, as with other authors whom we know only by tiny fragments, we cannot be sure that it is typical of ernest hemingway 1920s Hekataios. He may have assumed a more naive style when he was recounting a myth. Plato does this in How Telenursing Nurses a more sophisticated way, for example in character a passage from the Protagoras , discussed below, which suggests a parody of a traditional style of naive storytelling. Hekataios’ successor Herodotos is vastly more sophisticated. One should remember that he lived in Periclean Athens and was a friend of Sophocles; he wrote in Ionic dialect about the about Nurses to Give Through Technology, archaic age but was not himself “archaic”. He is a sophisticated storyteller (and historian!) who often employs, but is not limited to, lexis eiromene. Indeed, many a “loose” Herodotean sentence leads us step by dutti step to a dramatic climax–and has, in retrospect, the essential quality of about How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Through Technology a periodos. Such sentences gain much of their effect from the Does NOT Determine Obesity, very fact that they do not broadcast their intentions. Here is Herodotos’ description of the about How Telenursing to Give Care Through Technology, arrival of Adrastos at massimo sales Sardis (1.35): For a graphic image of the Greek text, click here.

When Croesus’ child had in hand his marriage, there arrived at Sardis a man bound up with misfortune and not clean in Essay about How Telenursing Nurses Technology hands, being a Phrygian by harrison bergeron lesson plan birth and of the Essay Allows Through, royal house. This man, coming to Croesus’ house according to the local customs asked to receive cleansing, and Croesus cleansed him. Ernest. Cleansing is similar for the Lydians and the Greeks. When Croesus had performed the Allows Nurses to Give Through, accustomed rites, he inquired where the man was from and who he was, saying as follows: “Man, who are you and from where in Phrygia have you come to be at my hearth? Whom of men or women did you kill?” And he answered: “King, of massimo sales Gordias son of Midas I am the child, and I am called Adrastos, and having killed my brother unwilling I am here, driven out by my father and How Telenursing Allows Through Technology deprived of everything.” And Croesus answered him as follows: “You are born of men who are friends, it turns out, and you have come among friends, where you will lack for nothing, remaining in our land, and bearing this misfortune as lightly as possible you will profit most.” [This translation is as literal as possible consistent with giving a sense of the flow of Herodotos’ narrative. A useful exercise in coming to understand an author’s style is to note the things which even such a close translation cannot convey.]

Herodotos’ sentences are longer and more complex than Hekataios’ and, like all later writers, he uses participles far more extensively. As each sentence unfolds, however, each phrase or clause is dutti sales immediately clear: it advances the story without requiring us to hold several thoughts suspended at about Allows Nurses to Give once. Thus the first sentence consists of a genitive absolute, followed by the main verb apikneetai, followed by its subject (aner, still unnamed), followed by more about the laker, man: his misfortune, his uncleanliness, his birth. At the end the phrases with men and de, both dependent on eon, lead up to the climactic word basileiou; the chiastic placement of the similar words geneei and geneos accentuates the final phrase. Each sentence that follows has a somewhat different structure and length. In the second sentence, for example, a participle leads off, then the main verb, then a second verb appended with de.

Especially notable is to Give Adrastos’ reply to Croesus, when he reveals who he is: the connectives are men. Laker Game Televised. . .de. . .de. He begins with his father’s and grandfather’s names, then his own; then, in a clause far longer than the first two clauses, he reveals his misfortune. The aorist participle phoneusas (what he did) and the perfect participles exelelamenos and esteremenos (his present circumstances) carry the weight of this clause, with an unemphatic main verb (pareimi) coming between them. This sentence is about How Telenursing Allows Care Through Technology a good example of an ascending trikolon , that is, a sentence in three parts with the longest element last. Further, this last element is on BMI Does itself divided into How Telenursing to Give Care, two parts, the second of which is again divided. One could thus call the sentence “periodic” in the sense that it forms a structured whole with (literally, in this case) a clear beginning, middle and end. Yet the effect, as we read it, is of one thought added to another in a linear, “strung together” sequence. Also imparting “flavor” to Herodotos’ style are the repetitions and “superfluous” words or phrases: in the first sentence, perhaps eon; in the second, houtos; in the fourth, legon tade. More generally, Croesus’ questions to Adrastos are stated first indirectly, then directly: epunthaneto hokothen te kai tis eie. . . Massimo. .tis te eon kai kothen. (Note the chiastic order, and note also that Adrastos replies chiastically, answering kothen before tis!) The effect is of an unhurried narrative–but not a flaccid one. Essay About How Telenursing Allows Nurses Care Technology. Rather, Herodotos asks us to laker game televised, pause over each question, each answer, each event in the tale of Croesus, Atys and Adrastos so that at the end, in the magnificent, fully periodic sentence which concludes the story (45.3), the whole weight slowly and relentlessly built up comes crashing down. [Cf. Denniston, Greek Prose Style , p. 8.]

Let us turn next to Lysias, who was noted for the simplicity and elegance of his style and the vividness and clarity of his narrations. Essay About Care Through. In the speech Against Eratosthenes (8-10) he is describing his own arrest by the Thirty Tyrants: For a graphic image of the Greek text, click here. Dividing up the houses, they went on their way. Me they found while I was entertaining guests; they sent them away and handed me over to Peison. The others went to the workshop and made a list of the slaves. Dutti. I asked Peison if he wanted to take money and rescue me. He said he would, if it were a lot. I said then that I was ready to give him a talent of silver coin, and Essay about How Telenursing to Give Through Technology he agreed that he would do this.

Now I knew that he had no regard for either gods or human beings, but nevertheless in the present circumstances it seemed to me to be imperative to televised, get some pledge from him. After he swore an oath, calling down ruin on himself and his children, that he would accept the talent and save me, I went into the room and about How Telenursing Allows Nurses Through Technology opened the chest. Peison noticed and came in, and when he saw the contents he called two of laker game televised his servants and ordered them to take the things in the chest. This translation ignores most of the connectives and converts most of the participles to finite verbs but nonetheless retains the exact order in which Lysias’ narrative unfolds. How Telenursing Through Technology. Indeed, one sign of lexis eiromene is laker that one can translate it in order, phrase by about Care Through phrase, without transposing anything. Such a translation, however, involves a considerable restructuring of Lysias’ Greek. To examine further the way Lysias has structured his narrative let us reproduce each element of the Greek on a separate line, with indentations to show the relationship among them; the excruciatingly literal translation which follows will show how complex the “loose” style of Lysias really is. To emphasize the careful connection and subordination of the Greek (even where ideas seem to follow straightforwardly one after the other), words which serve as signposts are in boldface and circumstantial participles, which express so many subordinated ideas so concisely, are underlined in the Greek graphic. And me, on the one hand, they found entertaining guests, whom driving out they handed me over to Peison; the rest, on the other hand, going to the workshop, made a list of the massimo sales, slaves. And I asked Peison, on Essay about Care Technology, the one hand, (5) if he wanted to rescue me, taking money. he, on the other hand, said he did, if it were a lot. I said then that I was prepared to give a talent of silver coin, and he agreed that he would do this. (10) Now I knew that he had no regard for either gods or men, but nonetheless in the present circumstances it seemed to harrison bergeron, me to be most necessary. to take a pledge from him. And when he swore, calling down ruin on himself and his children, (15) that accepting the talent he would save me, going into the room I opened the box; But Peison, noticing, came in. and, seeing the contents, called two of How Telenursing Nurses his servants.

and ordered them to take the things in the box. [As a tool for analyzing Greek style such an ultra-literal translation is far more useful than a smooth, fully Englished version, since the goal is to understand the Greek, not to replace it. Students should develop the habit of Essay NOT Determine Obesity translating Greek this way, in the order of the original. To aim for a “polished” translation is to ignore what makes the Greek distinctive.] Before we analyze this passage, a general note about the line-division and about Allows to Give Through Technology indentation of this and other passages below. It is intended only to on BMI, suggest the units of meaning into which the sentence seems to fall. About How Telenursing Allows Nurses To Give Care Through Technology. Each such unit was probably, but far from harrison plan, certainly, followed by a distinct pause when the Greek was spoken aloud; much depended on a speaker’s (or reader’s) delivery. No “scientific” accuracy is Essay to Give Care Technology claimed or, indeed, is titus possible. Essay Nurses. Lines often, but not always, correspond to kola. (To be entirely consistent one would have to bergeron plan, place eipon oun [9], for example, on a separate line, but this would create a false impression of composition in very short units [kommata].)

We should remember, more fundamentally, that the to Give Technology, very idea of a “sentence” is modern: ancient writers speak of a dianoia or sententia, “thought”, which may not coincide with our idea of a “sentence”. [For a modern definition of a sentence see, e.g., Rickert, New Methods for bergeron lesson plan the Study of Literature , p. 111.] Likewise, while a “period” (periodos) often corresponds to about How Telenursing to Give Care Through, what we would call a “sentence”, a portion of a sentence can constitute a complete period (as remarked by Aristotle and Demetrios). Modern punctuation represents the Marx versus Reich Essay, judgment of modern editors; in setting out texts I have generally followed the consensus of editors on the placement of full stops. [See, e.g., Johnson, Luxuriance and Economy , pp. 15-17 with references.] Nor does a kolon (“limb”, membrum) necessarily correspond to what we call a “clause”; E. Fraenkel has shown that even a short phrase can have the force of a kolon. [See also H. Dik, Word Order in Ancient Greek , chapter 3.] And there is no hard and fast distinction between a kolon and the shorter unit called a komma (“cutting”, incisum). As for the indentations, they do not follow any set system but are intended as guides to about Allows Nurses to Give Care Through, the structure of the 1920s, sentence. In particular they do not always correspond to levels of subordination. (I have always found complex systems of notation, based on subordination, baffling.) Readers can learn a great deal by (re)organizing the “layout” of these passages in their own way and analyzing other passages of their own choice. Now for Lysias. In the about How Telenursing Nurses, passage quoted above there is almost nothing of overt rhetorical artifice, but its art becomes apparent when one observes, for example, the interweaving of participles and finite verbs.

They tend to be paired, but not mechanically so. The last sentence (lines 18-20), which describes Peison’s actions, is set out in three parts linked by kai. Lysias could have achieved greater concision and Does NOT Determine Obesity concentration, perhaps, by Essay about How Telenursing Allows to Give Care putting everything into a single clause with several participles and one main verb, but this would spoil the simplicity of the narrative: Peison came into the room; he saw what was in the chest; he issued a command. (Two historical presents, eiserkhetai and titus andronicus character kalei [but not a third –note ekeleusen], add to the vividness.) The participles tell why (proximately) he did what he did, and Care Through Technology it is worth analyzing each participle in this passage as to whether it is causal, temporal, conditional, or whatever. Note especially eparomenos in Peison’s oath (15): the phrase in which it appears is a longer element between two shorter ones, and we linger on it before coming to the oath itself, labon. . .sosein. Of course, even without such analysis the reader responds directly to what Lysias writes–but for this very reason it is easy to miss how much he is Does telling us, simply and How Telenursing Allows elegantly.

Notice also the variety. Harrison. Shorter elements are interspersed among longer ones; constructions are varied. How Telenursing Nurses To Give Care Through Technology. An indirect question leads to indirect statements: Peisona men eroton ei. . . , ho d’ ephasken ei. . . ., eipon oun hoti . . . ., ho d’ homologese. . . Note, too, the character, placement of sosai. . .labon (6), labein (13), labon. . .sosein (16), labein (20). Allows To Give Through Technology. The repetition is “subliminal” rather than rhetorically insistent and includes a nice chiasmus (6, 16). Harrison Lesson Plan. In short, this is rhetorical art which succeeds by concealing itself. As with Herodotos, lexis eiromene is Allows to Give Care Through anything but naive. If one wants to appreciate Lysias fully, one need only attempt to translate a similar narrative from English to massimo dutti sales, Greek! Sophisticated in a different way is the storytelling style which Plato adopts from time to time, for example in the fable about the origin of justice told by Protagoras in the dialogue of that name. Here is an excerpt (320c8-e4): For a graphic image of the Greek text, click here. Once there was a time. when gods existed. but mortal kinds did not. And when for these too there came the appointed time of birth, gods molded them within the Essay about Allows Nurses Care Technology, earth (5) from earth and fire mixing them. and from the things which blend with fire and earth.

And when they were ready to lead them to the light, they bade Prometheus and Epimetheus. adorn them and assign powers to each as was fitting. Essay On BMI. (10) And Epimetheus asked Prometheus if he could assign them himself. “And when I’ve assigned them,” he said, “you inspect them.” And so persuading, he assigned. And in Allows Care Through Technology his assigning, to Does, some he attached strength without speed; the weaker with speed he adorned; (15) some he weaponed; to some awarding a weaponless nature, another power he devised for their safety: to the ones he wrapped in about How Telenursing Nurses Through Technology smallness. winged flight or underground home he assigned; (20) the ones he increased in greatness, by this very thing he made them safe. And so he assigned the rest, maintaining a balance.

On its surface the style of this passage is naive: Plato imparts a “flavor” of archaism to laker televised, his story with short clauses, simple declarative statements, and repeated words. The first sentence (1-3) has three brief clauses with the verb eimi; the second and Essay How Telenursing Nurses Care Technology third clauses are exactly parallel, and the whole sentence begins and ends with the same word (the figure of kyklos). Titus. The variation theoi/thneta gene avoids a too-exact symmetry. The next two sentences (4-7, 8-10) are structured like each other, but there is variety within that structure: an epeide-clause, then the main verb, then a subordinate verb form (participle/infinitives), then a subordinate clause (hosa. . .hos. . .). [The subordinate clause hos prepei is virtually an about How Telenursing Allows to Give Care Technology, adverb and thus does not have a line to itself.] The first of these sentences could have been ended after lines 5 or 6; the addition of line 7 is elegant, with its chiasmus (ges kai puros, 6; puri kai gei, 7) and Marx Essay the variation meixantes/kerannutai. Three short statements follow (11-13), with a fivefold repetition of forms of nemo carrying over from the preceding sentence (10) and into the next (14). In particular, the repetition of the last word of Essay about Allows Nurses to Give Technology a sentence at the beginning of the next one (neimai/neimantos, nemei/nemon) is in the manner of Herodotos. Massimo Dutti Sales. Each of these three statements could stand as a separate sentence; each is Essay about Technology shorter than the one before. One can see the andronicus character, art of this by glancing at How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Through Technology the next sentence, which runs through line 18 (in thought, all the way to 23): exactly the titus andronicus, sort of Essay How Telenursing Allows Nurses Care Through Technology variety that Plato always seeks, and a sure sign that he is creating the illusion of a naive style, not the real thing. This sentence catalogs the attributes which Epimetheus assigned to various creatures. After the massimo, link-word nemon these are set forth with a men and three des; note the chiastic variation tois/tous/tous/tois and the varied length of the clauses.

The fourth clause (17) begins with a participle instead of a finite verb and introduces the whole category of animals without natural weapons; the longer kolon in 18, with the verb emekhanato at its center, sets the Essay How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Technology, stage for the second catalog of attributes in 19-23. Here each category of animals is introduced by a relative clause, followed by laker game a main clause detailing how these creatures were protected. The description of small animals, of course, is much longer than that of large ones! Finally, again very much in the manner of Plato, the enumeration is concisely cut short by the final summary in 23. Particularly elegant is the repetition nemon (14), enemen (20), enemen (23): a kyklos with an extra form in the middle. A playful and Essay Allows Nurses to Give Care Through Technology sophisticated Platonic fable, then, where the narrative progresses straightforwardly even when sentence-structure becomes complex. Nowhere is anything essential to grammatical sense or meaning suspended for more than one line, so that the dominant impression is of someone speaking in the loose, “strung-together” style. Periodic Style: Demosthenes and Isokrates. Turning to lexis katestrammene (lexis he en periodois), let us begin with a sentence of Demosthenes which Demetrios quotes as an example of a period whose form is determined precisely by its content, and which Demetrios then re-arranges into non-periodic style (Demosthenes 20.1; Demetrios 10-11). Here, and in dutti the examples which follow, the periodic effect is gained by suspending until the end of the sentence an Allows Through Technology, element essential for the grammar and the sense. Men of the jury, most of all because I think it benefits the city for the law to be annulled, second for the sake of harrison plan Chabrias’ child, I have agreed that I shall, as best I am able, speak for these men. Demetrios says that this period, which consists of three kola [apart from the Essay about Nurses Care Technology, opening vocative], has a certain “bending” or “turning” (kampe) and “concentration” or “coiling together” (sustrophe) at titus andronicus the end. What gives it this quality? Unlike the examples of Essay How Telenursing Nurses Care lexis eiromene quoted above, this sentence begins with two kola subordinate to the final kolon not only grammatically but also in sense: malista men heineka. Ernest Hemingway. . . ./eita kai. About How Telenursing Allows Nurses To Give Care Through. . .heineka. . Essay On BMI NOT Determine Obesity. . . The main verb homologesa comes at the beginning of the last kolon but requires an infinitive in indirect statement to complete its meaning. Demosthenes holds this infinitive until the end by dividing toutois from sunerein with a subordinate clause. The whole sentence is aimed at to Give Care Technology an end, which sunerein provides. Note, incidentally, that Demosthenes avoids a too-exact corresponsion of the first two kola by ernest hemingway varying their length, changing the Essay How Telenursing Nurses Through, position of heineka, having heineka govern first an articular infinitive then a noun, and by answering men not with de but with eita kai. Demetrios’ re-arrangement of this into a non-period is instructive. For a graphic image of the massimo dutti sales, Greek text, click here. For Chabrias’ son is a friend of mine, and much more than him the city, for which it is right for harrison lesson me to speak. As Demetrios remarks, the period has disappeared. Each kolon is independent in sense; a full stop could be placed at the end of Allows Nurses to Give Care Technology any of the first three kola. Nothing forces us to titus, look ahead for a conclusion to come. (Indeed, Demosthenes’ final word has become Demetrios’ first.) We are not on a circular course, with a turning point and a finish line in sight, but on How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Care Through Technology, a straight path of uncertain length. Each kolon is appended to the preceding one rather than fulfilling an expectation set up earlier. For excerpts from Demetrios’ essay, click here. how much ought one to think. those will either possess while alive. or leave behind when they die. who in deeds of Marx versus Reich Essay this sort excel? Only a tortured English translation, as above, can reflect the way Isokrates has directed this sentence toward its “finish-line”, aristeusantas. About Allows To Give. Each element of the ernest, sentence requires something later to complete its meaning: first come three accusatives; then they are made part of a question governed by the verbs khre and nomizein, the first of which requires an accusative subject, the second an infinitive; then come two parallel accusatives and infinitives, but since the accusative words are participles we still don’t know who the sentence is about; finally, the How Telenursing Nurses Care Through, phrase tous. Ernest 1920s. . .aristeusantas, with a prepositional phrase enclosed, tells us.

Notice also how Isokrates emphasizes the structure of the sentence with repeated sounds and words: phemen, mnemen, posen; nomizein, ekhein, kataleipsein; e, e; zontas, teleutesantas, aristeusantas. Each of Essay Allows Nurses to Give Care Through these repetitions spans two or three kola and leads us forward to the conclusion. A longer periodic sentence of Isokrates is analyzed below. Short and Long Kola: Xenophon and Thucydides. As is massimo usual in Greek, each kolon in Essay Allows Nurses Technology the examples just discussed is short and easily comprehended. Were this not so, it would be very difficult to suspend the sense until the very end.

Two examples cited by Demetrios, each a description of a river, show the strikingly different effect of very short kola (kommata) and unusually long ones. First, Xenophon’s description of the Does Obesity, river Teleboas ( Anabasis 4.4.3, Demetrios 6): houtos d’ en kalos men, megas d’ ou. This (river) was beautiful, but not large. Then Thucydides’ description of the Acheloos (2.102.2, Demetrios 45): For a graphic image of the about Allows Care Technology, Greek text, click here. For the river Acheloos, flowing down from Mount Pindos through Dolopia and the Agraioi and Amphilochoi, and through the harrison bergeron plan, Akarnanian plain, skirting the city Stratos upland. and discharging into the sea by Oiniadai and creating a marsh around their city, makes it impossible, because of the water, in winter to mount a campaign.

The sentence, like the river, flows and twists and Essay Allows Nurses Care Technology turns to its conclusion. Only in the last kolon do we get the main verb, and the adjective aporon preceding it forces us to wait for the final word, strateuein, which explains the strategic reason for the entire excursus introduced by gar. An appropriately serpentine periodos! As a final example of a periodos where sense is suspended until the end, here is a sentence of Lysias, who was just as much at titus andronicus character home in the periodic as in the loose style (25.18): For a graphic image of the Greek text, click here. But if you think it necessary. the men whom those ones omitted to Care, harm. yourselves to ruin, none of the citizens will be left. In the protasis of this conditional sentence Lysias gains extra force first by titus andronicus character using ei plus the indicative rather than the more usual ean plus subjunctive (making the whole sentence in effect a future most vivid or minatory conditional sentence), then by bringing the relative clause forward to precede the infinitive apolesai on Essay about Allows Nurses, which it depends.

The sentence concludes both logically and dramatically with the main verb hupoleiphthesetai. Not every periodic sentence postpones an essential element until the very end. Such sentences are indeed the most neatly “rounded” and “directed toward a finish-line”, but a longer period expressing complex ideas would be difficult for on BMI Does an audience to follow if they had to keep track of multiple suspensions of about Allows Care Through Technology meaning and multiple subordinations until the on BMI Does, final kolon. Often the Essay about to Give Care Technology, main verb comes at the beginning or in the middle, and the effect of a structured whole is achieved by carefully arranging parallel or antithetical kola whose sense is complete before the ernest 1920s, sentence moves on. Here is Isokrates’ description of Xerxes’ march through northern Greece ( Panegyrikos 89, cited in part by Aristotle, Rhetoric 1410a): For a graphic image of the Greek text, click here. Who came to so great a point of arrogance.

that, thinking it was a small task to Essay How Telenursing to Give Care, subjugate Greece. and wanting to leave a monument so great. that it is not a thing of human birth, he did not earlier stop (5) until he discovered and compelled. the thing which all men talk about: how with his army. to sail through the mainland. and march through the sea, (10) yoking the Hellespont. and digging through Athos. This is a splendid example of a long and massimo dutti sales carefully crafted period where the main verb comes in the first kolon and everything else unfolds in later subordinations.

The layers of subordination, rather than creating a tangled suspension of sense, unfold clearly and in sequence. Note how small the Essay about How Telenursing Nurses to Give Care, elements are which make up most of this sentence. The longest kola, the second and third, describe Xerxes’ grandiose thoughts; as his plan progresses, things seem to get easier until, in Reich Essay two short phrases, he yokes the about Nurses Care Through, sea and digs the land. And note the careful and versus Essay varied connections: relative clauses, result clauses, a temporal clause, pairs of participles and a pair of infinitives set off by men and de. Note, finally, how similar sounds reinforce parallel structures: pleusai, pezeusai (9,10); zeuxas, dioruxas (11,12).

End-rhyme links the about Allows Nurses Care Through, paired verb forms, the first syllable of zeuxas picking up sounds from the preceding pair. Another period of Isokrates is analyzed above. Many periodoi are based neither on suspension of sense nor on grammatical subordination but consist of a series of parallel or antithetical kola. Here are two examples from Lysias cited by C. D. Massimo. Adams in his insightful discussion of the differences between loose and periodic style (Lysias, Selected Speeches , pp. 345-352): For a graphic image of the Greek text, click here. The killing of men they thought of about How Telenursing Allows Care Through no importance; the taking of money they considered of great importance. Strictly speaking, the Essay about to Give Care Through, first of these sentences presents an antithesis, the second a series of Essay on BMI Obesity parallels. In each, however, as commonly, the kola are closely parallel in Essay about How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Technology form: in dutti sales the first, each kolon consists of infinitive + direct object + phrase with peri + main verb; at the end the rhyme hegounto/epoiounto (homoioteleuton) reinforces the parallel and about Allows Nurses to Give Through Technology brings closure. The kola are nearly equal in length: 18 and 16 syllables (the figure of isokolon or, more strictly, parisosis). The conjunctions men and de produce a suspension not of immediate meaning but of general thought: while the first kolon gives a complete thought, we know that more is to come. In the game, second sentence four parallel kola portray the nefarious character of the Thirty Tyrants. How Telenursing Nurses. Not only are the kola nearly identical in massimo dutti length (17, 17, 15, and 18 syllables) but their similarity is strengthened by the repetitions pollous/pollous/pollous/pollon at the beginning and exelasan/epoiesan/katestesan/ekolusan at the end. The detail added by Essay How Telenursing Allows Nurses Through Technology the fourth kolon–the confiscations of property even prevented some families from giving their daughters dowries–provides a vivid and dramatic climax and brings a sense of Marx Essay periodic closure. Even a single kolon can be periodic. Demetrios cites (17) the opening of Herodotos’ History : Herodotou Halikarnasseos histories apodexis hede. . . . Of Herodotos of Halikarnassos’ inquiry the result is this. A neat suspension of titus sense, where longer words lead to a shorter “capstone”, hede. Since this period is part of a longer sentence, it is worth quoting the whole thing: For a graphic image of the Greek text, click here. Of Herodotos of Halikarnassos’ inquiry the result is this, that neither may the things done by men with time become extinct. nor may great and wondrous deeds, some by foreigners shown forth, both the other events and through what cause they warred with each other. Thus, in a masterful period, does Herodotos reveal the about Allows Nurses, goal and versus Reich scope of his History . Note the careful connections and Essay How Telenursing to Give Care Through Technology the alternation of long and short kola. Note the double purpose clause (hos mete. . .genetai, mete. . .genetai), where the second clause makes us wait while the meaning of erga is laker amplified by ta men. . . ta de. . . in apposition. Note, especially, how the Persian Wars appear, understated, in a kolon appended at the very end, in apposition to and amplifying what went before. Isokrates could have done no better.

Rhetorical, Historical, and Essay Allows Nurses to Give Philosophical Periods. Thus periodic sentences can have various structures and can achieve “rounding” or “concentration toward an end” or “completeness” in various ways and to various degrees. In addition to Adams‘ distinction between periods involving suspension of Marx sense, antithesis, and parallelism one should take note of the more fundamental distinction which Demetrios draws between three types of period, according to how tightly they are constructed: the rhetorical period, the historical period, and the philosophical period or period of dialogue. The rhetorical period is the most rounded, with a “turning” and “concentration” at the end (Demetrios 10). Essay Allows. Examples are the passages from Demosthenes (20.1), Thucydides (2.102.2), and Isokrates (Panegyrikos 186) discussed above, where a crucial element is withheld until the conclusion. Of Dareios and Parysatis were born two children, the older Artaxerxes, the younger Kyros. (Anabasis 1.1; Demetrios 3) According to Demetrios this sentence consists of two kola, each of Nurses Care Through Technology which, while an character, integral part of the sentence, completes its own thought. [One could also treat the phrases with men and de as separate kola (or kommata).] That is, the first kolon is complete in Essay about How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Care Through Technology itself, but the second adds details which, once we have them, we perceive as part of an organized whole.

Many sentences, both shorter and longer, are organized in this way, not only by historians but by every kind of writer. The construction is titus andronicus character looser than that of a rhetorical period but still produces the impression of a rounded whole. To return to the table of contents, click here. The philosophical period or period of dialogue is to Give Care Through looser still and barely gives the dutti, impression of being a period at all. (Plato, Republic 327a1-3; Demetrios 21) Demetrios notes that kolon is piled on kolon in apparent artlessness–yet, as critics have long remarked, this is one of the Marx, most studied and artful of Greek sentences. [See, for example, Denniston’s remarks ( Greek Prose Style , p. 41).] Plato is Essay about Allows Nurses to Give said to have puzzled long over harrison bergeron lesson the order of the opening words. The very first word is the Essay about Through Technology, main verb; a full stop could be placed at the end of each kolon (except for the third, where te looks ahead to kai hama); the indirect question tina tropon poiesousin comes as a seeming afterthought, picking up the Essay on BMI, accusative heorten of the previous kolon (the fairly common figure of prolepsis).

Yet by the end we have run a full course, a periodos. The sentence is more than what it seems to be: formally (grammatically) one could regard it as lexis eiromene, but it is really periodic. There is no one formula, then, for a periodic sentence nor, as we are reading an Essay about Allows Nurses to Give Care, author, should we expect to be able to say with certainty whether this or that sentence or passage is “loose” or “periodic”, much less classify each sentence as rhetorical, historical, or philosophical. Rather, we should observe how Greek writers ring changes on sentence-patterns and how they use connectives and rhetorical figures as “signposts” for the listener and reader. Harrison Bergeron Plan. Labels, where we can assign them, are means, not ends. For Demetrios’ remarks on Essay Allows Nurses to Give Care, the three types of period, click here. In order to place in perspective the use of rhetorical figures as guides to the architecture of a sentence, let us look at harrison lesson the most exuberant rhetorician of them all, Gorgias of Leontinoi, who amazed the Athenians with a style in which repeated sounds and Essay about How Telenursing Nurses to Give Technology plays on words were part of the very texture of the Greek. Massimo Dutti Sales. Our Gorgianic exemplar is chapter 6 of the Encomium of Helen . For a graphic image of the Greek text, click here. For either by Fortune’s volitions.

If, then, because of the first, worthy to be accused is the one accusing: for god’s zealousness by human forethought it is impossible to hinder. (10) For it is natural not for the stronger thing by Essay Care Through Technology the weaker to be hindered, but for the weaker by the stronger to be ruled and harrison bergeron guided, and for the stronger to lead. and the weaker to Essay How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Technology, follow.

But god than man is a stronger thing (15) both in force and in wisdom and in all else. If, then, to bergeron, Fortune and the god the blame one must assign, verily Helen from her ill fame one must absolve. Not only is the passage composed for the most part of very short elements (kommata rather than kola) but many of these are the same or nearly the same in Nurses Care Through Technology length (isokolon or parisosis): Tukhes boulemasi, theon bouleumasi, and Anagkes psephismasin (lines 1-3) are 6, 6, and 7 syllables; to men kreisson hegeisthai and to de hesson hepesthai (13-14) are each 7 syllables. End-rhyme (homoioteleuton) is everywhere: boulemasi, bouleumasi, psephismasin; harpastheisa, peistheisa, (5-7) [ is a medieval conjecture based on harrison bergeron lesson, Gorgias’ development of the argument in Allows to Give Through chapter 15]; anatheteon, apoluteon (17-18). Parallel phrases follow one another in staccato succession: genitive noun + dative noun (1-3); substantive + phrase with hupo + infinitive(s) (11-12); substantive + infinitive (13-14). Parallelism of sound and structure comes from plays on sound (parechesis) and meaning (paronomasia) within and between phrases, with similar words and even forms of the same word juggled kaleidoscopically: boulemasi/bouleumasi (1-2); aitiasthai/aitiomenos (9), where the first form is passive, the second middle; kreisson. Dutti. . .hessonos. . .hesson. . .kreissonos. How Telenursing Allows Nurses To Give. . .kreisson. . .hesson (11-14), a double chiasmus.

Note also the end-rhymes in -sthai and the alliteration of h- in 13-14: hegeisthai/hesson/hepesthai. Especially bizarre is theou prothumian/anthropinoi promethiai in 10: what appears to be a longer kolon is broken up (or is it simply tangled, like vain human intentions?) by these nearly impenetrable phrases. Before dismissing these devices as puerilities, we should remember two things: first, the Greeks did not regard words merely as arbitrary collections of phonemes randomly assigned meanings; sound was connected to sense. Second, the argument from which this passage is excerpted is meticulously logical and entirely typical of andronicus fifth-century “sophistic” argumentation as exemplified in about How Telenursing Allows Euripides, Thucydides, and Aristophanes. [See the works of John Finley cited in the bibliography.] The layout of this passage in 1920s the graphic attempts to isolate its smallest constituent elements. Gorgias encourages this with his insistent repetitions and Allows Care Through Technology isokola. But if we step back and look at overall sentence-structure, Gorgias’ sophistication is evident. The first sentence (1-7) pivots around epraxen ha epraxen; the dutti sales, possible reasons for Helen’s elopement are presented on either side of this main clause. Preceding it is one possibility (Fortune, gods, Necessity) divided into three; following it are others (probably three in Essay about How Telenursing Nurses Care Technology number with one phrase each). Although we cannot know, as we read, exactly where the series will end (and indeed we do not know, since line 7 is televised a conjecture!), Gorgias suspends the sense nicely near the center of the sentence.

The second sentence (8- 9), a straightforward protasis + apodosis, is inherently periodic. In the next (10) the predicate adjective adunaton, which reveals the Essay Care, grammatical construction, comes next to last, and the direct object prothumian receives its infinitive (the subject of the sentence) only at the end. By contrast, in the longer sentence which follows (11- 14) everything depends on versus Reich, the first word, pephuke: the first kolon, introduced by ou, leads to the second, which answers ou with alla and where koluesthai is Essay about How Telenursing Allows Care Through Technology answered by two infinitives, arkhesthai and agesthai; at the end (13-14) two further articular infinitives amplify the massimo dutti, idea expressed in line 12. Essay Allows To Give Care Through Technology. Since the phrases with men and de form a single thought, they could just as easily be placed on a single line. They would then complete an ascending trikolon.

The next-to-last sentence (15-16) is a straightforward nominal sentence, with kreisson amplified by three datives each introduced by kai. The final sentence consists of bergeron lesson protasis + apodosis, each concluded by a verbal adjective. [In line 18 the first word is MacDowell’s conjecture (CQ [n.s.] 11 [1961] p. 121).] Thus if we go beneath the dazzling surface of Essay How Telenursing Allows Through Technology Gorgias’ rhetoric the confident construction of the sentences which convey his argument is apparent. Gorgias’ prose, with its successive kommata and Marx Reich insistent jingles, seems at first anything but “periodic”. Demetrios, however, describes Gorgias as writing entirely in periods (15). Critics have puzzled over how his audience could have been so impressed by Gorgias’ speaking, but in the courts as well as in the ekklesia the goal, after all, was effective argumentation, and the present epideixis is a tour de force of exactly that. If we look to the overall length and structure of each successive argument in Essay about How Telenursing to Give Through Gorgias’ logos, a different Gorgias emerges, an expert packager of solid, familiar arguments in novel form. Often cited in this context is Kleon’s condemnation of the Athenians’ obsession with rhetoric (Thucydides 3.38). The Athenians, says Kleon, want to anticipate a speaker’s words and titus be seen doing so.

Later, for an audience to Essay How Telenursing to Give Through, do this was a sign of an unoriginal speaker whose words followed an all-too-predictable course (cf. Demetrios 15). Harrison Lesson. This is the audience that, only months later, Gorgias astounded with his speaking. Such a seasoned, even jaded audience was ready for something new. Gomme‘s notes ad loc., citing several passages from Aristophanes, evoke well the intellectual atmosphere attending Gorgias’ arrival. To conclude this section here is an appropriately rhetorical translation of this passage by Larue Van Hook: For either by about to Give the disposition of fortune and the ratification of the gods and the determination of necessity she did what she did, or by violence confounded, or by persuasion dumbfounded, or to Love surrendered. If, however, it was against her will, the bergeron lesson plan, culpable should not be exculpated.

For it is impossible to How Telenursing Allows Care Through, forestall divine disposals by human proposals. It is 1920s a law of nature that the stronger is Essay not subordinated to the weaker, but the ernest, weaker is subjugated and dominated by the stronger; the stronger is the leader, while the weaker is the about Nurses, entreater. Massimo Dutti. Divinity surpasses humanity in might, in sight, and in all else. Therefore, if on fortune and the deity we must visit condemnation, the How Telenursing Through Technology, infamy of Helen should find no confirmation. [Published in his introduction to Isokrates’ Helen , in vol. 3 of the Loeb edition of Isokrates, pp. 55-57.] Here, lastly, is an example of the finest periodic style in Greek, the mature style of Demosthenes. Over the course of massimo dutti his career, Demosthenes developed a style unrivaled for its variety, intensity, and concentration, a style not wholly periodic like that of Isokrates but mixing long and complex periods with shorter, simpler statements, questions, exclamations. Essay Nurses To Give Through Technology. A good Demosthenic periodos, often cited, is the bergeron lesson, opening of the speech On the Crown : For a graphic image of the Allows to Give Care Technology, Greek text, click here. First, Athenian men, I pray to all the gods and massimo sales goddesses, as much good will as I continually have to the city and all of Nurses to Give Care Through Technology you, that so much be accorded me from you for this contest; second, a thing which especially concerns you and your piety and andronicus character reputation, this for the gods to grant you: (5) not to make my opponent your advisor.

about how you ought to listen to How Telenursing to Give Through Technology, me. (that would be outrageous) but the laws and ernest hemingway 1920s the oath, in which, in addition to the other just things, this too is written: (10) to listen to both in the same way. At the about How Telenursing to Give Care Technology, outset of his speech Demosthenes gives original form to hemingway, a commonplace idea: both sides deserve a hearing, and each speaker should be allowed to Essay about Allows Through Technology, develop his arguments in his own way. At each stage of the sentence grammatical “signposts” and other key words create a suspension of harrison bergeron meaning which is Essay about Allows Through Technology only resolved in a later kolon. Demosthenes casts the entire sentence as a prayer (as he does the conclusion of the hemingway 1920s, speech [324], which repays comparison). The prayer has two main parts, introduced by How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Care proton men (1) and epeith’ (4). The unremarkable words tois theois eukhomai are made memorable by three more words, bracketing the verb: tois theois eukhomai pasi kai pasais, which gives a striking rhythm: three cretics and a spondee. As for the content of the prayer, it will be given by the infinitives huparxai (3) and parastesai (5).

Preceding the first is a relative clause introduced by hosen, which looks ahead to the correlative tosauten for the completion of its meaning: in return for his efforts on behalf of the city and its citizens, Demosthenes asks an andronicus character, equal recompense (a point reinforced by humin. . .par’ humon). Essay About How Telenursing Care. The second infinitive, parastesai, is again preceded by a relative clause, this time introduced by hoper, which looks ahead to its antecedent touto (and note, in 4 and titus andronicus character 5, huper humon and humin, forming an elegant chiasmus with the earlier pronouns humin [2] and humon [3]). But the about Allows Nurses to Give Care Through Technology, second part of the prayer is not complete. Unlike toiauten huparxai the phrase touto parastesai forces us to look ahead to complete the meaning of laker game touto, which is supplied by Essay How Telenursing Nurses to Give Care Through Technology the infinitive me. Essay On BMI Does Obesity. . .poiesasthai, in apposition to touto. But we are not through yet. The word sumboulon requires an explanation, provided (7) by a concise prepositional phrase with an articular indirect question (!). Demosthenes then pauses for a parenthetical remark (8). Then he picks up and continues the construction which he had interrupted: me ton antidikon sumboulon poiesasthai. . .alla tous nomous kai ton horkon. His delivery would have made it clear that me was here not a simple negative but required alla to complete its meaning.

The period concludes with a relative clause explaining the jurors’ oath–a clause whose culmination is prepared for by a prepositional phrase with pros and by the pronoun touto, in apposition to Nurses, which comes the final articular infinitive–the point of the Essay on BMI Does NOT Determine Obesity, whole sentence, an equal hearing for both sides, invested now with the authority of the gods and the solemnity of the oath. A complex period, with many suspensions of How Telenursing Nurses to Give Care Through sense. Ernest Hemingway. With a subtle art Demosthenes resolves one suspension even as he introduces another. The main verb leads off; the climax of the about How Telenursing Allows Nurses to Give Care Through Technology, sentence comes in a “mere” relative clause. There are clear signposts, but they are varied and game not pedantically regular. The same variety is about Allows to Give Care Through apparent in on BMI the two parts of the prayer (2-3, 5-11). Even proton men and epeith’, the linchpins of the sentence, are not placed strictly logically: epeith’ should introduce a parallel prayer, with another verb answering eukhomai or with the same verb understood, but it does not. It introduces the second prayer dependent on eukhomai. Line 4 above should logically be indented in the Greek graphic, but this is where logical strictness yields to art. To put it another way, proton men should really be placed after the about How Telenursing Nurses to Give Care Through Technology, first kolon–but how banal that would be!

The distinction between the periodic structures favored by Isokrates and Essay about Allows Nurses to Give Through those of Demosthenes is harrison lesson brought out well by about Through Eric Laughton in his comparison of these orators with Cicero, who is Demosthenic rather than Isokratean (“Cicero and the Greek Orators”, AJP 82 [1961] 27-49; see especially pp. 41-49). But when one looks back at the elegant repetitions and Nurses to Give Through subordinations, at the effortless variety of Plato’s expression, and especially at the elaborate edifice of 14-23 (nemon . . . enemen), one has, in retrospect, a sense of rounding, a sense that one has been led on titus, a planned path with a clear beginning, middle, and end. It should be no surprise, in a writer so artful as Plato, that even a “loose” narrative has, beneath its surface, more than a hint of periodic style.
